Information for Faculty & Staff
How You Can Help
In your role as faculty or staff, students and other faculty/staff may perceive you as a good listener, and someone who can lend a helping hand. Your expression of interest and concern can be a critical factor in helping a struggling student find appropriate assistance. Knowing the signs of distress, when to seek consultation, and how to make a caring referral can help students significantly.
The UCC is available for consultation if you need to discuss ways to support a student you are concerned about. Contact our office during office hours to speak with one of our clinicians.
Referring to the UCC:
- Convey to the student your concern and express your belief that they could benefit from further support.
- Encourage the student to call the UCC at 336.758.5273 or walk in for a same day appointment. It is also appropriate to offer support as the student calls the UCC or offer to walk with the student to the UCC if they would like that.
- You can also find a complete list of mental health support options to share with the student on our Resources page.
Additional Concerns?
If you are concerned about a student who may need additional support outside of a mental health professional (e.g. housing insecurity, food insecurity, academic distress, etc.) we also encourage you to submit a CARE Team Referral by calling 336.758.2273, completing this referral form, or by emailing care@wfu.edu. A referral initiates a review by members of the CARE Case Management team, who provide support, guidance, or other intervention to students, faculty, and staff in need and connect them with appropriate campus and community resources.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The student must contact our office under their own free will. Faculty/staff, families, friends or loved ones are not able to schedule on the behalf of students. You may contact us while the student is with you; however, we will need to speak directly to the student.
It can be helpful to arrange a time to speak with the student again after making a referral. This helps to communicate your concern and interest. Continue to provide clear and consistent boundaries and expectations with the student in your staff or faculty role.
As a faculty or staff member at Wake Forest University, you are not mandated to report mental health concerns. If you observe a student expressing general concerns related to mental health and well-being the most appropriate thing to do is acknowledge the student, express authentic concern, and refer students to the wide array of resources offered at Wake Forest, starting with the UCC.
Please call our office at (336) 758-5273 and our staff will assess the situation and help make that determination. We may ask to speak directly to the student if they are with you at the time of the call.
If you believe the student, you, or another person is in imminent danger, please call 911.
If you are concerned about a fellow Deac, we encourage you to please submit a CARE Team Referral by calling 336.758.2273, completing the referral form, or by emailing care@wfu.edu.
Feel free to contact the UCC with any additional questions!
