Personal
I have a great partner and two wonderful sons with whom I enjoy spending most of my time outside of work. I love movies (especially documentaries), music, This American Life, college athletics, photography, and history. I’m attempting to learn how to cook and have yet to send my partner to the hospital with any illnesses as a result of my dishes, so I consider that a success!

My counseling style integrates a blend of interpersonal and cognitive behavioral therapy in order to help students explore the connection between their thoughts and emotional experiences. My clinical experience has been primarily college student developmental concerns; and I have also done clinical work in substance abuse outside of the university setting.

Personal
I grew up in South Carolina and love the warmth of the south. When I’m not doing my life’s passion of helping students deal with personal concerns and reach their goals; I can be found dancing it out in a Zumba class,  breathing it out in Bikram yoga,  or at a spa. I love trying to recreate the comfort foods my southern grandmothers made and visiting friends spread across the country.

I work predominantly from a psychodynamic perspective, exploring how early relationships and experiences have shaped one’s view of the world and how they experience it.  I place a high emphasis on the therapy relationship as the mechanism for change, while also utilizing various interventions to help students increase their ability to cope and tolerate distress.  I view therapy as an organic, collaborative process that looks different for each person I work with.

Personal:
I am originally from upstate New York, and had been living in central Florida for the past 10 years before relocating to North Carolina this summer.  In my spare time I enjoy hiking, kayaking, yoga, and running. I am a movie and book fanatic, and you may spot me reading in various places across campus.

I believe that the client-counselor relationship is one of the most important tools in developing a healthy and helpful experience for my clients. Building this relationship is a priority for me in any of the  therapeutic theories that I use. Although my therapeutic approach is flexible, in the most recent past, I have spent a lot of time using Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavioral and Solution-Focused Therapy. Although I use these techniques frequently, each client is different and I assess for each individual need in order to provide the best care possible.

Personal
I was born and raised in North Carolina in a small city outside of Charlotte. I’m excited about the opportunity to work with young adults and especially about serving at my alma mater. In my downtime, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, cooking, eating, singing, watching sporting events as well as various artistic performances. I recently returned to my native North Carolina after spending the past 10 years split between Washington, DC and Philadelphia; I must say it is good to be back! In my spare time, I can be found making and listening to music, going on adventures with my partner, daughter, and dog, cooking and baking (and eating!), traveling, and finding any excuse to be outside. I am really excited to explore my new home of Winston-Salem and to get back the mountains and beaches I grew up visiting in NC!

I strongly believe that the most important component in counseling is the therapeutic alliance and work to hold a warm, affirming space to support the challenging work of therapy (because change is hard for most of us!). I truly believe that each person is the expert in their own lives, at times struggling with being their own expert due to adjustment, trauma, mood/ anxiety, or other issues that create barriers to congruence. Therefore I facilitate space to understand who clients are from their frame of reference and cultural context. The specific approach used in treatment is determined based on where a person is in their development and mental/ emotional/ social/ spiritual/ physical health needs, although I tend to be a psychodynamic/ attachment/ family systems theorist at heart. I regularly incorporate person-centered, emotionally-focused, mindfulness, relational-cultural, and cognitive-based techniques. My goal for myself as a counselor is to honor client experiences and concerns with transparency, humor, and empathy.

Personal
My ultimate passion is my daughter and family (including my fur-babies), so I spend as much time as possible with them. As a native North Carolinian and farm girl at heart, I love getting dirty and being active outside, eating good food, listening (and badly dancing) to music, and exploring the world around me in all its glory. I also enjoy non-competitive running, cycling, and mountain-biking, as well as experimenting with home design projects (yay power tools and paint!) when possible.

Based on client needs, I also sometimes invite clients to explore existential and spiritual identities as a means to understanding problem etiology and resolution.

Personal
When I am not working, I’m spending time with my wonderful family or indulging my hobbies. I tend to gravitate towards hobbies that lead to concrete results so I like to work on cars, running, and cooking. I acknowledged a long time ago that I am what many would consider a geek – indeed even before it was en vogue to be one.

I was born in raised in Charlotte, NC; some would say I’m a true Southern Bell! I enjoy my tea sweet and my winters short. Being the eldest of three girls I’ve learned a lot about sacrifice and my own willingness to care for others. I believe that my love for others started at home. I enjoy serving my local community through engaging in many volunteer events focused mainly on aging adults and children. When I’m not working I’m writing poetry ( performing spoken word ), dancing , mentoring youth at my church and spending time with my wonderful husband!

I often tell students to think of therapy as a class for learning more about yourself and developing skills for managing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that can be distressing and disruptive to everyday life.  This approach is based on a combination of psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral approaches that allow for exploration of historical causes of current problems in students’ lives and teaching techniques for overcoming these issues in the present day.  My relational style tends to incorporate a lot of humor as well as directness in sharing my thoughts and reactions in a constructive way.

Personal
I am originally from Michigan and have lived in a few other Midwestern states throughout graduate school and beyond, so I am happy to now be living in a place with lots of trees (no more corn fields!) and outdoor recreation.  In my free time I enjoy spending time with my partner and our two cats, getting creative with interior design and furniture restoration, cooking and baking, and shopping.

I was born in St. Louis, MO, and was the first person in my immediate family to go to college. From an integrative framework, I provide individualized counseling services using the following modalities: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Person-Centered Therapy (PCT); Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT). Using a forward-thinking approach, I strive to collaborate with clients to develop and enhance effective coping skills (to prevent problems), and to develop effective problem-resolution skills to remediate negative coping behaviors. Personal
When I’m not serving as an Intern in the University Counseling Center, I enjoy planning family vacations (mostly in warmer climates that are close to the beach). My belief in the human capacity for growth and healing led me to pursue a career in counseling. I view each client I encounter as an individual with unique strengths, challenges, and perspectives, all of which I strive to honor in a therapeutic relationship. It is my hope to learn with and from students in an atmosphere of trust, empathy, authenticity, and non-judgement in order to facilitate change and help clients meet their goals. I strive to create a warm, safe, and inviting space for clients to authentically show up and achieve desired goals.

I am originally from Alexandria and Charlottesville, Virginia before I moved to Greensboro for graduate school. In my spare time I enjoy hiking with my pup (Kingsley), playing the piano or saxophone, or indulging in an embarrassing amount of reality television. I am really excited to get out of Greensboro and see all that Winston-Salem has to offer.
